Dogs have adapted really well over many hundreds of years to live with us successfully, but every family situation is different.

We need to be clear about what our expectations are (and make sure they are realistic for our particular dog) and each individual dog has to learn and develop the specific skills and behaviours that they need to be really comfortable in their particular environment.

Developing these skills and behaviours is a bit like building a house. Most importantly, you need good foundations – think of these as core life skills and essential dog needs which have to be met. The bricks and walls are then all the different ‘learned’ behaviours which might vary according to your own situation and circumstances. If the foundations are poor, the whole structure is likely to be unstable (if indeed you can build it at all!)
